Chapter 2 Run Against The Great Beyond 

“Yes, I do!” Joe exclaimed. “I’m not dying the very day I got my shot. I’m due! Heck, I’m overdue. Nuh-uh! I’m outta here.”
 
He spun on his heel and once again started to run against the flow of the moving sidewalk.
 
“I don’t think you’re supposed to go that way,” the older woman called after him.
 
Joe didn’t care. “This can’t happen,” he told himself. “I’m not dying today. Not when my life has just started!”
 
He glanced back. Behind him, the slidewalk had begun to ascend like an escalator, carrying the three souls upward toward The Great Beyond.
 
Fzzzt! With an electric crackle, they disappeared into the light.
 
“Gahhh!” Joe screamed, running faster. “I’m not finished! I GOTTA GET BACK! I DON’T WANT TO DIE!”
 
As he scrambled against the slidewalk, he saw more souls coming toward him.
 
“Run!” Joe screamed at a soul who looked like a sad-eyed young man. “Why aren’t you running? Don’t you want to live?”
 
“I dunno.” The soul shrugged disinterestedly, and the slidewalk carried him away.
 
Joe ran on, passing more and more souls. They appeared to be all ages and spoke many different languages. Some seemed freaked out, while others seemed at peace. Most just looked confused.
 
Joe pushed past all of them, searching for an exit. “Help, I’m not done!” he panted. “I’ve got to get back!”
 
Joe tripped and tumbled off the edge of the slidewalk. He fell against an invisible barrier. It stretched beneath his weight, and then ripped. Joe found himself falling ...

Joe opened his eyes. He was lying in a landscape of rolling blue-green hills. Not far away, he could see a cluster of bizarre buildings that were made of some kind of gossamer material. They appeared to be crafted from air and light.
