                【时事】原来他们也想合作的

China  launched astronauts  to  space  station  中国宇航员进驻空间站，这可是个大新闻，it’s  a  blockbuster  news.  Blockbuster  重磅的，还经常说blockbuster  movie轰动一时的电影、大片。

各家外媒当然都有报道，我们今天听的这段音频截取自CNN访谈，很多新闻提到a  new  space  race  新的太空竞赛，很显然，the  previous one  is  between the  US  and  the  Soviet Union之前的那一场是在美国和苏联之间的。

来听一下这段音频，长38秒。关于space，我们来猜个谜语：I  have  keys,  but  no  locks; I  have  space, but  no  rooms; you  can  enter, but  can’t  go  inside.  What  am  I?  你听懂了吗？答案又是什么呢？我们将在本节末尾揭晓。

It  should  not  come  as  a  surprise that  China's  doing  it.  On  this  issue  of  space, there  is  a  way  to  approach  this,  so  that  the  science and  technology  service stays  inside  the  science  and  technology  box,  without  getting outside  of  that,  where  it  becomes  national security  issues  for  either  country. 

We  would  both  benefit from  some  cooperation in  space,  but  getting  our  own  house  in  order  is  part  of  being  competitive,  vis-à-vis China,  and  the  US  Business Committee  is  four  square  behind those  efforts.

中国这样做，应该并没有什么意外的。

Come  as  a  …  指某物发生的时候给人的感觉或者认为它是怎样的，come  as  a  surprise让人觉得意外，后面还可以加其它词，来听两个例句看看能听懂么：This  ruling  will  come  as  a  blow  to  BP.    The  sudden cancellation  has  come  as  a  great  disappointment.  第一句用的是come  as  a  blow是一个打击，整句是说，这一规定对BP来说是一个打击。第二句用的是come  as  a  disappointment  令人失望，突然取消令人失望。

On  this  issue  of  space,  there  is  a  way  to  approach  this,  so  that  the  science and  technology  service  stays  inside  the  science  and  technology  box, 

在太空这件事上，有一种操作的方式，使得科学与技术的服务保持在科学与技术的范围内，

Approach  是个很常用的词，文中的a  way  to  approach this这里的approach是动词，表示接近、处理，如果说“新年快到了”，比较正式的说法就是The  New  Year  is  approaching. 

Approach做名词也很常见，表示方式、手段，比如来听美剧The  Big  Bang  Theory中的一句：We  seem  to  have  different approaches  here.  看样子我们的方式不同。

Stay  inside the  box指在某一界限内，跟它相近的一个表达，很常见，我们之前讲过，你还记得吗？来听这句：Think  outside  the  box.  Don’t  always  do  the  things you  did.  后面说不要总是做你之前做的事情，前面的部分你听出来了吗？Think  outside the  box，就是跳出思维定势。

而不要到这个界限之外，变成国家安全问题，对任何一国都是如此。

这句中的where  it  becomes…  这里的where读的很轻，这时是指在某种状态或者情形下，比如来听TED演讲中的一句：For  most  of  your  life,  you  live  out  your  existence where  everything  is  normal.  你一生的大多时间，你的生活中，一切都是正常的。

这句里的either  country，原声读的是/'aɪðə/，第二遍读的是/'iðɚ/，前面的是英式的发音，当然美国人也有一部分人读/'aɪðə/，而/'iðɚ/是只有在美国才这样读。

We  would  both  benefit from  some  cooperation in  space, 

在太空有一定的合作，这对我们双方都有益，

Benefit  from受益于，后面如果加动词，要用ing的形式，比如benefit  from  being  close  to  the  university受益于离大学近。

说到受益，相关的一个词就是受益人，你知道它的英文吗？来听美剧Desperate  Housewives中的这句：In  the  event  of  his  death,  I  was  not  the  beneficiary.  如果他死亡，受益人不是我。

but  getting our  own  house  in  order  is  part  of  being competitive,  vis-à-vis  China, 

但保持自己的实力，是在面对中国保持竞争力的一部分，

Be  competitive有竞争力，与之相关的常用表达还有remain  competitive保持有竞争力；competitive  advantage竞争优势，也可以说competitive  edge. 

Competitive还可以有其它一些常见用法，比如来听这句：Our  industry  is  so  competitive.  我们的行业竞争太激烈了。再来听美剧Modern  Family中的一句：Claire  and  Jay  are  incredibly  competitive. Claire和Jay非常争强好胜。这里如果说sb.  is  competitive就是某人好胜心很强。

Vis-à-vis  是源自法语的单词，表示face  to  face,  or  in  relation to,  with  regard to面对某物、关于或者与某物相关的。

and  the  US  Business Committee  is  four  square  behind those  efforts.

美国商业委员会是这些努力的坚强后盾。

Four  square behind意思就是大力支持，比如来听这句话：Air  Force  is  four  square behind  it,  and  is  also  defending  civil  use.  空军是它身后的坚强后盾，同时也在民用方面起到保护作用。

Riddle

I  have  keys,  but  no  locks;  I  have  space, but  no  rooms; you  can  enter, but  can’t  go  inside.  What  am  I? 

我有钥匙，但是没有锁；我有空间，但是没有房间；你可以进入，但是不能进到里面去。我是什么？ 

如果只看中文翻译，你是怎么也想不出答案的，因为这里的几个词在英语中都有双重意思：key可以表示钥匙，还可以表示琴或者键盘等上面的键；space可以表示空间，还可以表示打字时的空格；enter可以表示进入，还可以表示回车。所以，答案就很清楚了，就是keyboard,  键盘。
