09 伊索寓言The Ass, the Fox, and the Lion

Theass and the fox entered into partnershiptogether to protect each other, and swore eternal friendship. Soonafter they went a-hunting, but before theyhad gone far a lion crossed their path. Thefox saw the lion first, and, pointing him out to the ass, said, “We must make terms with this lion and get him to be friendlywith us.” So saying, he wentboldly up to the lion and offered to help him securethe ass, provided that his own life should be spared. Thelion was quite willing to promise this, whereuponthe fox induced the ass to follow him to adeep pit, into which he managed to push him. Assoon as the lion saw that the ass was secured he sprang upon the fox and made ameal of him, leaving the ass to be eaten at his leisure.

Thosewho betray their friends must not expectothers to keep faith with them.
