Text 1

W: What do we have for breakfast?

M: Breakfast? It’s already one o’clock. Weare ready to have lunch.

Text 2

W: Jenny seems to be on top of the world.

M: She got five A’s. Hard work pays off.

Text 3

M: Would you like to learn to drive a car?

W:No. I don’t like driving because I think it’s dangerous. Taking the bus or the taxi is safe and comfortable.

Text 4

W: This is 911. Can I help you?

M: Yes. I was just in a car accident.

W: Please stay calm. Where are you? Are you injured?

M: I am OK. But my son is badly hurt. We are at the crossing of Pine Road and High Street.

Text 5

M: How about leaving for the airport now? It’s already half past two.

W: There is something wrong with the clock.Don’t worry! We still have an hour left.

M: Does that mean the clock is ten minutes fast?

W: Right.

Text 6

W: What’s the matter with you, John? You seem to be down.

M: Yes. As a matter of fact, I’m always feeling down these days.

W: Why? Have you experienced something bad recently?

M: No. I have been living a quiet life.

W: Then is there anything wrong with your health? Are you feeling tired?

M: No, I feel well.

W:If so, I think you should first take a break from your work and go to seek a psychologist for advice.

Text 7

M: When do you want to leave for that seaside town, Martha?

W:I’m not sure yet, but maybe we should leave Friday after work. It’s a long drive. But I’d rather get there late Friday than midday Saturday. We have three days off this time after all.

M: How long is the drive?

W: Five or six hours.

M: Say, you leave at 4:30 right after work. And you’ll be there around nine or ten.

W: I suppose so. And we could still have a good night’s sleep.

M: What are you going to take?

W: Do you think it’s gonna be a bit cold at night at the seaside?

M: Maybe. I’m going to take a sweater or a light coat, just in case.

W: I hope we have a good time there.

Text 8

M: Hey, Jenny, are you studying or working in a company in China?

W: Neither, I work there as an English teacher.

M: That’s great. Are you enjoying yourself there?

W: Sure. My students like me and we often hang out together.

M: Will you stay in America for some time,or will you go back to China soon?

W: I’ll spend the summer vacation here with my family.

M: In that case, will you go to Tony’s wedding?

W: When is it?

M: July 28th, the day after tomorrow.

W: OK, I’ll go. But I’ll contact him first.I can’t go without an invitation.

M: Right.

Text 9

W: Dad. You love me, don’t you?

M: Of course, I do. Why do you ask… Ah, what’s on your mind?

W: Well, I saw this great offer for a free cellphone here in the newspaper, and…

M: Free? Why do you need a cellphone anyway?

W: Dad. All my friends have one, and I can use it to call you in case the car breaks down.

M: Ah, I don’t know. There are always so many fees.

W:But the monthly charge for this service is only $29.99, with 1, 000 free weekday minutes nationwide, and unlimited weekend minutes. Plus, unlimited anytime minutes for anyone using the same service.

M: I don’t know.

W:And you can roll over the extra minutes to the next month instead of just losing them. What do you think of that?

M: Yeah, but what is the length of the service agreement?

W: It’s only half a year. But you won’t have to worry about me while I’m driving the new car.

M: Teenagers! What do they think of next?

Text 10

Dolphinsare not fish, but warm-blooded animals. They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are a lot like other creatures, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals.Their brain is nearly the same size as our own, and they live a long time—at least twenty or thirty years.

Like some animals, dolphins use sounds to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.

There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learned to look for a dolphin called Jack. From1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way.

Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them, and in these places it is against the law to kill them.
