In the United States, it is common to ask about your friend’s occupation, or job, first.  You can ask, “How’s work going?” or “How’s school going?”

If your friend has anew job, you can ask “How’s the new job?” Your friend may have recently moved to a new apartment  or house, so you may say, “How’s the new place?”

If you have other friends in common, you may want to talkabout them.  You can ask, “Have you seen Joe recently?  What’s he up to?”

If you have recently spent time with a mutual friend, youmay share some information about this person. For example, you might say, “Isaw Alex last week.  She has a newboyfriend.”
