America was called the New World in old times. Most people believe that Christopher Columbus discovered America.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, the kings of several European countries gave money to explorers(探险家). They hoped that explorers would be able to find gold and new lands. The king of Spain chose Columbus to do this job.
Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean(大西洋) from Spain. He wanted to find Asia, but he never did. However, he discovered America by accident. On October 12, 1492, his ships landed in a strange place. Columbus thought that the place was India. But in fact, it was one of the Bahamian Islands(巴哈马群岛).
Columbus did not really “discover” the New World. Millions of people were already living there when he arrived. However, his journeys were just the beginning of hundreds of years of exploring the world.
