Jack and Annie crouched in the tall grass. There was a big lion, three lionesses, and a bunch of cubs.

杰克和安妮蹲在高高的草丛里。有一只大狮子，三只母狮子和一群小狮子。

"I think they're sleeping," whispered Annie.

“我想他们在睡觉。”安妮小声说。

"Yeah," said Jack. "But for how long?"He pulled the Africa book from his pack and opened it.

“是的,”杰克说。“可是要待多久呢?”他从包里抽出那本非洲的书，打开来。

He found a picture of lions sleeping under a tree.

他发现了一幅狮子在树下睡觉的画。

He read in a whispery voice:

他低声念道:

After a pride of lions has eaten, they rest for a few hours. The other-"What did they have for lunch?" Annie broke in.

一群狮子吃完后，会休息几个小时。另一个——“他们中午吃了什么?”安妮破门而入。

"Don't ask," said Jack. He kept reading:

“别问了。”杰克说。他不停地写着:

Sensing that the lions are not hunting at the moment, the other animals graze nearby.

其他动物觉察到狮子此刻没有捕猎，便在附近吃草。

"If they can graze, then we're safe," said Annie. She started to stand.

“如果它们能吃草，我们就安全了，”安妮说。她开始站起来。

"Wait!" Jack pulled her down. "Not so fast."He peered around. The words in the book seemed true: the zebras and giraffes didn't seem to be bothered by the lions at all.

“等等!”杰克把她拉了下来。“没那么快。”他往周围看了看。书中的文字似乎是对的:斑马和长颈鹿似乎根本没有受到狮子的骚扰。

"They might be safe. But I'm not sure about us,"said Jack. "We need a plan.""What if we wait till they leave?" said Annie.

"That could take hours," said Jack. "Plus they might be hungry again by then.""Oh, right," said Annie.

"So here's the plan--we tiptoe," said Jack. "Tiptoe?""Yeah?""That's your whole plan?" said Annie.

"Yeah, tiptoe to the rope ladder," said Jack. "Very quietly.""Good plan," Annie teased.

"Just do it," said Jack. He stood up slowly. Annie stood with him.

They began tiptoeing through the grass very slowly.

他们开始慢慢地踮着脚尖穿过草地。

The lion flicked his tail.

狮子轻摆尾巴。

Jack and Annie froze.

杰克和安妮呆住了。

When his tail was still again, they moved again.

当它的尾巴又静止了，它们又动了。

Suddenly, high-pitched laughter split the air.

突然，一阵尖锐的笑声划破了空气。

Jack and Annie stopped.

杰克和安妮停了下来。

The hyenas were back! They were standing off to the side, watching Jack and Annie.

土狼回来了!他们站在一旁，看着杰克和安妮。

Jack and Annie made silent monster faces and shook their fists. But the hyenas only laughed some more.

杰克和安妮做了个鬼脸，挥舞着拳头。但是土狼只笑了几声。

The big lion stirred lazily. He opened his golden eyes.

大狮子懒洋洋地动了动。他睁开了金色的眼睛。

Jack felt the hair rise on the back of his neck. But he didn't move an inch.

杰克感到他脖子后面的头发都竖起来了。可是他一动也不动。

The lion lifted his head and yawned. His giant teeth gleamed in the sunlight. The lion turned his head a she looked around sleepily.

狮子抬起头打了个哈欠。他巨大的牙齿在阳光下闪闪发光。狮子转过头来，她睡眼惺忪地看了看四周。

Jack held his breath as the lion's gaze rested on him. The lion sat straight up. His piercing yellow eyes met Jack's.

当狮子的目光落在杰克身上时，他屏住了呼吸。狮子坐直了身子。他那双锐利的黄眼睛与杰克的相遇了。

Jack's heart raced. His mind raced. He remembered something he'd read--lions avoid giraffes.

杰克的心跑。他的脑海中闪现。他想起了他读过的一些东西——狮子避开长颈鹿。

Jack looked around. There was a giraffe walking toward the tree that the magic tree house was in.

克环顾四周。有一只长颈鹿向魔法树屋所在的那棵树走去。

Suddenly, he had a new plan.

突然，他有了一个新计划。

"Get under that giraffe," he whispered.

“躲到那只长颈鹿下面去。”他低声说。

"Now you're the one who's nuts," Annie whispered back.

“现在是你疯了。”安妮小声回答。

But Jack grabbed her hand. He pulled her over to the giraffe and underneath it.

但是杰克抓住了她的手。他把她拉到长颈鹿跟前，藏在长颈鹿下面。

The giraffe's legs were so long, Jack and Annie could stand up under it. Jack's head barely brushed the giraffe's golden belly.

颈鹿的腿很长，杰克和安妮都能站起来。杰克的头几乎没有碰到长颈鹿的金肚皮。

The tall creature froze for a few seconds. Then she moved slowly toward the tree.

这个高大的生物愣了几秒钟。然后她慢慢地向树移动。

Jack and Annie walked in the same rhythm as the giraffe.

杰克和安妮像长颈鹿一样有节奏地走着。

They got closer and closer to the tree house--and closer and closer to the pride of lions.

他们离树屋越来越近，离狮群越来越近。

The big lion had stood up. He watched them moving under the giraffe.

大狮子站了起来。他看着他们在长颈鹿下面移动。

When the rope ladder was just a few feet away,Jack and Annie dashed out from under the giraffe to the rope ladder.

当绳梯离他们只有几英尺远的时候，杰克和安妮从长颈鹿身下冲到绳梯上。

Annie scrambled up first.

安妮先爬了上去。

Jack followed right behind her.

杰克紧跟在她后面。

As they climbed, the lion growled and leaped at the ladder.

当他们爬上梯子时，狮子咆哮着扑向梯子。

The hyenas laughed.

土狼笑了。

Jack climbed faster than he'd ever climbed. He leaped after Annie into the tree house.

杰克爬得比他以前爬得快。他跟着安妮跳进了树屋。

Annie had already unrolled the scroll. The riddle was gone. In its place was one shimmering word:HONEY 

安妮已经打开了卷轴。谜底消失了。取而代之的是一个闪闪发光的词: 蜂蜜

Jack grabbed the Pennsylvania book. He opened it and found the picture of the Frog Creek woods.

杰克抓起那本宾夕法尼亚的书。他打开它，发现了树蛙溪森林的照片。

"I wish we could go there!" he said.

“我希望我们能去那里!”他说。

Just then, the giraffe stuck her head through the window.

就在这时，长颈鹿把头伸进了窗户。

"Bye, honey!" said Annie, and she kissed the giraffe on the nose.

“再见，亲爱的!”安妮说着，在长颈鹿的鼻子上亲了一下。

The wind started to blow.

开始刮风了。

The tree house started to spin.

树屋开始旋转。

It spun faster and faster.

它转得越来越快。

Then everything was still.

然后一切都静止了。

Absolutely still.

绝对静止。
