CHAPTER 16 Darkness
The judges and crowd poured out to the street. Luciestretched her arms toward Charles. Barsad proposed to the few officials left,“Let her embrace him for a moment.”
Charles folded her into his arms. “Farewell, darling of mysoul. We shall meet again, where the weary are at rest! ”
“I can bear it, dear Charles. I am supported from above.Don't suffer for me.”
Her father began to fall on his knees before them. Darnaygrabbed him, crying, “No! What have you done, that you should kneel to us? Weknow now what you went through when you learned my family name. We know thenatural hatred you conquered for her sake. We thank you with all our hearts! ”
The doctor's only answer was a shriek of anguish. As Darnaywas drawn away, his wife stood looking after him with a comforting smile. Hewent out at the prisoners' door. She turned to her father and fell at his feet.
Carton came out of his corner to pick her up. “Shall I takeher to a coach? ” he asked her father and Mr. Lorry.
When they arrived at their building, Carton carried her totheir rooms. He laid her down on the couch, where her child and Miss Pross weptover her.
He arranged to meet Mr. Lorry at Tellson's at nine o'clockthat evening. Mr. Lorry followed Carton to the outside door.
