CHAPTER 15 Dusk
The court was all stirred up when the sheep pressed into acrowded corner. Mr. Lorry and Doctor Manette were there. She was there, sittingbeside her father. When her husband was brought in, she turned a loving andtender look on him for encouragement.
The jury contained the same determined patriots as the daybefore and every day.
The president asked, “Is the prisoner openly accused orsecretly? ”
Mr. Public Prosecutor answered, “Openly, President.”
“By whom? ”
“Three voices. Ernest Defarge, wine merchant of SaintAntoine, Therese Defarge, his wife, and Alexandre Manette, doctor.”
A great uproar took place in the court. Doctor Manettestood.
“President, I protest! Who and where is the false person whosays I accuse the husband of my child! ”
The president rang his bell. “Listen to what is to followand be silent! ”
Defarge was called for questioning.
“You did good service at the taking of the Bastille,citizen? ”
“I believe so.”
“Inform the jury what you did that day in the Bastille.”
“I knew this former prisoner had been kept in a cell knownas One Hundred and Five, North Tower. I decided to examine that cell. In a holein the chimney I found a written paper. This is that paper. It is in thehandwriting of Doctor Manette.”
“Let it be read.”
