Stone Soup

Once upon a time there was a man who liked to play tricks.

从前，有一个喜欢耍花招的人。

One day, the man came to a town.
一天，这个人来到了一个小镇上。

On his cart, he had a big pot of water.

在他的马车上，有一大桶水。

In his pocket, he had a small round stone.

在他的衣兜里，有一块小圆石。

The man said to the people,
这个人向大伙儿喊道:

"Stone soup. Stone soup for sale!"

“石头汤。卖石头汤啦!”

The people laughed and said,
大伙儿都笑了，说:

"You can't make soup from stones!"

“用石头可做不出汤来!”

"I can,"said the man.I can make soup from this stone."
“我能，我能用这块石头做出汤来。”这个人说。

The people came to see him make stone soup.

大伙儿都围过来看他做石头汤。

"First, I heat up a pot of water,"said the man.
这个人说:“首先，我把这锅水加热。

"Then I put in this small, round stone "

然后，我把这块小圆石放进去。”

After a while, the man tasted the soup.

过了一会儿，这个人尝了尝汤。

Mmmm, it tastes good!" he said.

他说:“嗯，嗯，味道好极了!

"If I had some onions,it would taste better."

如果有一些洋葱的话，味道会更好。”

"Here are some onions,”said an old woman.
“这儿有一些洋葱。”一个老妇人说。

The man put the onions in the soup.

这个人把洋葱放进汤里。

After a while, he tasted the soup again.

过了一会儿，这个人又尝了尝汤。

"Mmmm, it tastes good!" he said.
他说:“嗯，嗯，味道好极了!

"If I had some carrots,it would taste better."

如果有一些胡萝卜的话，味道会更好。”

"Here are some carrots,”said a young man.
“这儿有些胡萝卜。”一个年轻男子说。

The man put the carrots in the soup.

这个人把胡萝卜放进汤里。

After a while, he tasted the soup again.
过了一会儿，这个人又尝了尝汤。

"Mmmm, it tastes very good,”he said.
他说:“嗯，嗯，味道好极了!

"If I had some potatoes,it would taste better."

如果有一些土豆的话，味道会更好。”

"Here are some potatoes,"said some children.
“这儿有一些土豆。”几个小孩说。

The man put the potatoes in the soup.

这个人把土豆放进汤里。

After a while, he tasted the soup again.
过了一会儿，这个人又尝了尝汤。

"Mmmm, delicious," he said.
他说:“嗯，嗯，味道好极了!”

"Can we taste the soup now?" asked the people.

大伙儿问:“现在我们可以尝尝你的石头汤了吗?”

"Oh, yes!" said the man.

“噢，当然可以!”这个人说。

The people tasted the soup.

大伙儿品尝起石头汤来。

"Mmmm," they said."This stone soup is delicious!"

“嗯，嗯，这石头汤真美味!”他们说。

The man sold all the stone soup.

这个人卖掉了所有石头汤。

Soon,he had lots of money.
很快，他有了很多钱。

Then he took the stone out of the pot 

这时，他把那块石头从锅里拿出来，

and put it back into his pocket.

放回到他的衣兜里。

He got into his cart.
他坐上了马车。

"What a good trick!" he said."It always works!"

“这一招真灵验!百试不爽!”他说。

And he drove quickly away.

他迅速驾车离开了小镇。
