做志愿看门人

新冠病毒肆虐期间我在我们校区做志愿看门人。那段时间真的很危险，因为这个病毒最先在中国爆发，医学界也不清楚它可能造成的危害究竟又多大，并且没有有效的方法去控制它。各个城市进入了禁闭期。我们小区每户人家没两天可以出来一个人去采购。这要求小区门口又足够的人员给出入者测体温和要求他们填写登记表。物业上人手不够，我想自己年轻力壮，应该免疫力强。就主动申请做志愿者。那次志愿工作之后，我认识了很多以前不认识的邻居。

I’d like to talk about a time when I worked as a volunteer doorkeeper in my community during thecoronavirus epidemic (新冠病毒）. Yeah, a critically dangerous period of time!

So you may have read the news as well, about when the coronavirus epidemic firstbroke out（爆发）here in China. It was Chinese New Year so most people were at home having a gathering with their family. As soon as the virus started to spread, we were put intothe lockdown stage(禁闭期) under strict regulations from the government. Everybody stayed in! But you gotta buy food, you know. In my community, the building management staff recorded every family’s information and would allow one person to leave the community every two days. A hard rule was that every community had to arrange enough staff totake the temperatures of the people who entered and exited（给出入人员量体温） and have them fill out theregistration form(登记表). The management didn’t have enough staff to do this so I volunteered to take this job.

To be honest, it was a pretty risky job at the time because the virus was new and spreading fast. Even the medical community was clueless about the damage it could make. But well, I just thought that I was young and healthy. I worked out regularly. I must have a stronger immune system than most people. Anyway, I worked there for half a month. My Mum was so concerned about me working there. But I was OK and because of that work experience, I got to know a lot of neighbors and even made friends with some of them. For the first time, I found my community so lovely and warm!
