1. ring a bell with 听起来耳熟 

ring a bell with sb = sounds familiar 听着耳熟。有时候坐出租车会问司机：Does Elm Street ring a bell? 你知道Elm Street 在哪里么？ 也可以说ring the bell. Does the name Joey ring the bell? Joey这个名字有印象么？

2. he beats you 他超过你了

He beats you. 这里JOEY不是说他打了你，而是他超过了你。 Beat 这个词当名词有节奏的意思,heart beat心跳节奏或者心跳声。Beat it 躲开,避开 Michael Jackson的经典歌曲，当时引进中国的时候全部翻译成了“还击”，意思正好相反了，Michael 歌曲的意思是告诉年轻人避免冲突，beat it, 退一步海阔天空。 

3. pipe dream 白日梦

pipe dream 幻想，白日梦.也可以用day dream。有一部英文老片也叫这个名字

4. make fool of oneself 出丑

make fool of oneself 自己出丑 make fool of oneself in public 当众出丑

5. take brunt of sth 正面冲击

take brunt of sth = bear the brunt . Brunt 本意是正面的冲击。 Take brunt of it 承受某事最大的压力，正面的冲击
