More than one-third of the coral in the northern and central parts of the Great Barrier Reef is dead or dying, scientists said. The chief culprit for the mass bleaching of the past two months is high water temperatures—partly from the El Niño weather phenomenon, but aggravated by global warming. A cyclone lowered temperatures in the reef’s southern part.
