The Offences Against the Person Act 1861, for example, covers a variety of offences which are broadly defined as being committed against the person and, besides prescribing the punishment for murder and manslaughter, includes such crimes as wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, administering poison, using explosives, assaults, bigamy and abortion.
