英文原文:

70% of planet Earth is covered in water.

But we use a lot of it.

For our homes, washing and cleaning?

To keep businesses running

And support agriculture, which supplies the world with a source of food.

However, sometimes the demand for water is far greater than the supply.

So what can we do to take some of that pressure off our resources?

There are dry regions in the world that are experimenting with treating sea water.

The process of separating salt molecules from water molecules is called Desalination.

There are two ways to desalinate water.

Reverse osmosis is a process that forces water molecules to go through a special filter, which separates the salt from the water.

Or you can separate salt from water by heating it up.

Water turns into steam when it boils leaving salt behind.

If the evaporated steam is captured when it cool it turns back into a liquid that’s drinkable water.

But Desalination is not without serious drawbacks.

It uses a vast amount of energy and costs twice as much as recycling water.

And if all the salt is not properly disposed of it could pollute the environment.

However new technologies using hydro power could cut energy use by 30 percent.

Also diluting the salt left over from desalination could reduce the environmental impact.

These innovations can make desalination cheaper and more environmentally friendly.

What can we do to help?

By thinking more carefully about how we use and conserve water at home, in businesses or on farms they’ll be a better chance of sustaining water supply and demand into the future.
