Once upon a time, there was a boy called Tom. （从前，有个叫Tom的小男孩。）
Once upon a time, there was a boy called Tom, and he didn't have a coat to wear.

"Oh, dear, oh, dear," His mother said, "I'll have to make you one. " So she went to the shop and bought a length of blue cloth. （“天啊，天啊。”他的妈妈说，“我得给你做一件外套。”于是她去店里买了一段蓝色布料。）

She laid it out on a table and she set to work. All day, she worked and worked, cutting and shaping and fitting one part to another part. And she made him a beautiful coat. （她把布料铺在桌子上，开始动手啦。剪啊，裁啊，缝啊，她做啊做，做了一整天，给他做了一件漂亮的外套。)

Tom was so pleased with it that he wore that blue coat in sunshine and snow, and rain and wind. He ran and jumped and splashed and rolled in it.（Tom非常、非常喜欢他的蓝外套，晴天穿、雪天穿、雨天穿，刮风天也穿。他穿着它跑啊、跳啊，还玩水和打滚。）

But then one day his mother looked him up and down. （然而有一天，妈妈从上到下打量他。）

"Oh, dear, oh, dear, "she said, "that coat is tattered and torn beyond all redemption."（“天啊，天啊。”他的妈妈说，“那外套已经破破烂烂，补都没法补啦！”

She laid the blue coat out on a table and she set to work. All day she worked and worked, cutting out the best bits and shaping them together, fitting one part to another part, and she made him a beautiful waistcoat.（她把蓝外套铺在桌子上，开始动手啦。她把外套上好的部分剪下来，裁啊、缝啊，她做啊做，做了一整天，给他做了一件漂亮的马甲。）

Tom was so pleased with it that he wore that blue waistcoat in sunshine and snow and rain and wind. He ran and jumped and splashed and rolled in it. （Tom非常、非常喜欢他的蓝马甲，晴天穿、雪天穿、雨天穿，刮风天也穿。他穿着它跑啊、跳啊，还玩水和打滚。）
