Patrick Hickey, Europe’s most senior official on the International Olympic Committee, was arrested on suspicion of ticket touting.

Police said the raid on Mr Hickey’s hotel room in Rio de Janeiro was connected to the arrest on August 5th of Kevin James Mallon, director of THG Sports, a sports-hospitality company accused of illegally reselling tickets.

Cuba’s ex-president Fidel Castro responded brusquely to the speech given by Barack Obama during his visit to the communist-run island. 

Writing in the state-run Granma newspaper, the 89-year-old revolutionary leader rebuffed the American president’s suggestion that the 54-year-old trade embargo be lifted, putting the cold war in the Americas to rest.
