英国首相辞职演讲：I Have Done My Best（1）

Ever since I first stepped through the door behind me as Prime Minister, I have striven to make the United Kingdom, a country that works not just for a privileged few, but for everyone. 

自从担任首相第一次跨过身后这扇大门，我就一直努力使英国成为一个为全民服务而非仅仅为少数特权阶层服务的国家。

And to honour the result of the EU referendum. 

我也一直遵从脱欧公投的结果。

Back in 2016, we gave the British people a choice. Against all predictions, the British people voted to leave the European Union. I feel as certain today as I did three years ago that in a democracy, if you give people a choice you have a duty to implement what they decide. 

2016年，我们给了英国民众一个选择的机会。出乎所有人的意料，英国民众投票决定脱离欧盟。今天的我和３年前一样确信，在民主国家，如果给了民众选择的机会，政府就有责任去执行他们的决定。

I have done my best to do that. 

我已为此拼尽全力。

I negotiated the terms of our exit and a new relationship with our closest neighbours that protects jobs, our security and our Union. I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal. Sadly, I have not been able to do so.I tried three times.

我就我们的退出条款及与我们亲密邻邦构建的新型关系进行了谈判，新关系将保护民众的就业、安全和整个国家。我已竭尽所能希望说服下院议员支持该项协议。很遗憾，我没能说服他们。我尝试了３次。

I believe it was right to persevere, even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new Prime Minister to lead that effort. 

我相信我们应该坚持，即使成功似乎面临很大的阻力。但我现在清楚地意识到，符合国家最大利益的就是由一位新首相带领大家继续努力。

So I am today announcing that I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday 7 June so that a successor can be chosen. 

因此，今天，我宣布，我将于6月7日星期五辞去保守党领导人职务，以便选出继任者。
