Victory for Cambridge Rowers
On 7 April, Cambridge University beat Oxford University in the men’s and women’s Boat Races. The annual event along the River Thames in London is one of the oldest and most famous sporting occasions in the UK. The men’s team first took place in 1829, and the women’s competition began in 1927. It is contested between teams of eight students from each university, who race along a 4.2 mile (6.8 kilometer) section of the Thames between Putney and Mortlake in the south-west of the city.
Cambridge men finished the route in 16 minutes an 57 seconds; the women recorded a time of 18 minutes and 47 seconds. Cambridge have now won the men’s event 84 times to Oxford’s 80. They also lead in the women’s race, with 44 victories to Oxford’s 30.
James Cracknell set a record by becoming the oldest competitor and oldest winner in the race. Cracknell, aged 46, is already a well-known rower after winning gold medals for Great Britain at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, and is now studying human evolution at Cambridge. After retiring from rowing in 2006, Cracknell decided to compete again and go for glory in the Boat Race.
