 A truant is a student who stays away from school on purpose without permission.

2)逃学:play truant = play hooky  

Students who hate school may play truant or play hooky.

现在,在口语中也可以说:skip classes或cut classes

Some studentsoften skip classes and spend their time playing on-line games.

区别:an imaginative child有想象力的孩子

3. shame 

n.  羞耻

学习两个常用表达:

用法1: A puts B to shame  

场景1:His unique Halloween costume put ours to shame.

场景2:When the first iPhone was released in2007, it put all the other cellphones to shame.

用法2:shame on sb  

造句:

The guy made a such stupid mistake. But he denied it.

Shame on him! What a shameless person !  

“Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice, shame on me.

Fool me three times, shame on both of us.”

4. hitchhike  

v.搭免费便车

When you hitchhike, you travel by getting free rides from drivers of passing cars.

In most countries in Europe, it is legal to hitchhike and in some places hitchhiking is even encouraged.

Hitchhiking became a common method of traveling during the Great Depression.

Some young people still love to hitchhike around the world.

During the two-month summer vacation, some college students hitchhiked around Europe.

When you want to hitchhike, you are supposed to face the direction of the oncoming(迎面驶来的)car and stick out your thumb.

The border between two countries or regions is the line that divides them.

Sometimes the border also refers to the land near this line.

用法: the border between A and B

The small town lies on the border between China and Russia.   

Such a town is called a border town.  

When you cross the border, you will see border guards who secure the border. 

引申用法:

It is difficult to define the border between confidence and conceit.

What is the difference between confidence and conceit ?

Johnny Unitas曾说:

6. evade 

v.  逃离,逃避

词根:vade = to go, walk

同源词:invade:

1) evade:逃避应该做的事

If you evade something, you find a way of not doing something that you are supposed to do or have a responsibility for.

比如:

evade school

evade taxes/ evade paying taxes

evade responsibility / responsibilities(具体的职责)

场景1:

Peter is always trying to evade all responsibility for his behaviour.

Peter , you are not a little kid anymore.

You can’t go on evading your responsibility in this way.


2)回避(问题、话题)

To evade a question or a topic means to avoid talking about it or dealing with it.

场景2:

The president kept evade answering the question.  

Clearly, he was trying to evade the issue.  

区别:avoid  vs  evade

evade 

To evade means to find a way of not doing something you are supposed to do or have a responsibility for.

avoid 

To avoid means to prevent something from happening. You can avoid a bad situation , such as an accident, a mistake, or a misunderstanding.

比如:

合法的避税:legally avoid taxes
