I’m often asked this question of what advice would I give to aspiring actress or actor. The thing I do find myself saying often is you should just don’t ever give up. If acting is something you feel is in your veins and in your DNA, and you just want to do it and believe that you should and believe that you can. And if you keep believing that enough and you keep working hard, because this is not going to be handed to you on a plate. Then that’s more important than anything else.

我经常被问到会给年轻的演员们一些什么鼓励性的建议，我发现我经常会说的一件事就是不要轻言放弃。如果表演深入你的骨髓和基因，你就想要表演，并且相信你应该表演，能够表演。如果你足够深信一切并且一直努力，因为这不是一件唾手可得的事，这比其他任何事都重要。

Determination and confidence will get you everywhere. Especially when you walking into an audition room, because if you walk into an audition room when you’re terrified and desperate, then they’ll smell it on you, and you’re less likely to get the job. But if you just believe in yourself and you work hard and you walk in there, and bring confidence and good positive energy with you, you’re much more likely to get another looking.

I live my life you know every time I’m cast in a film, I’m equally as terrified as I was about the challenge. When I did my first film at 17, and when I did Titanic, and when I did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, when I did The Reader. You know, the fear I think is what drives me to be honest. You know acting is such a wonderful thing to do, and I love it, and I love it more as I’m getting older I think. But it is scary, because you can easily get it wrong.

Five key traits to be successful. I don’t know if I really got five. I mean I think I’ll certainly say one of them would be to work hard. You know because I do think that we live in a time now where it’s quite easy to get a sort of full sense of celebrity or fame, and to aspire towards celebrity and fame without even talking into account steps that you need to take to get to achieve that thing.

成功的五大关键，我不知道我能不能说出五个来，我肯定其中一点就是要努力。因为我们现在生活的时代太容易就可以成名，这会鼓励这种不需要脚踏实地就能成为名人的方式。

I think it’s making young people lose that sense of work ethic. You know if you believe that something you want to do, and you want to be successful at it. It will not just come to you. You have to work to what’s achieving that goal. No one else is gonna achieve it for you. It’s you’ve only got yourself to rely on.

我认为这会让年轻人丢掉工作的道德感，如果你相信你的愿望，你要成功实现它，因为成功不会不请自来，你必须努力工作来达成目标。没人会帮你完成，你只能依靠你自己。

And I would say so self-relience really, determination, confidence, positivity and staying healthy, you know. I think healthy in your mind and in your body, especially at this time that we live in now where I think there is a lot of pressure, there’s a lot of exposure. I think it’s difficult to be private for young people who aren’t even in public eye, just children who are at school. And hang on to that sense of privacy because once you give it away, it’s very very hard to get it back. And just self-respect I think that are things that important.

当然还有自立，决心，自信，积极，还有保持健康，保持身心健康，特别是在如今这个时代有太多的压力，和太多的曝光度。对于不在公共视线里的年轻人来说保持隐私也很难，甚至是学校里的孩子们。一定要守住隐私，因为一旦失守，要再找回来就非常困难了。还有自尊，我觉得这些都是非常重要的！
