The winter solsticeoccurs when the sun’s rays are directly over the Tropic of Capricorn【南回归线。Capricorn 摩羯座】, 23 and a half degrees south of the equator. The solstice is whenthe earth is tilted most away from the sun on its axis. The winter solsticemarks the longest night and the shortest day in the northern hemisphere whilethe southern hemisphere will have their longest day. The sun stays below theNorth Pole horizon during the winter solstice and it’s the beginning of winterin the Northern Hemisphere. The winter solstice is different than the equinox which is when the sun’s rays are directly overthe equator that happens twice a year when day and night are equal length. Theday after the winter solstice will begin lengtheningdays which leads out to the summer solstice in June.
