Looking for Work(Continued)

They drenching nearly did for me! That evening I ran a fever, burning hot one moment and icy cold the next. My face was as red as if roughed, my whole body ached, and turning over in bed hurt like being needled! I remembered: Because I’m young, people often jostle me out of queue; and when some of them make trouble and the foreman whips them, he often lashes me too. In that crowd his whip falls on a whole lot of people, and it leaves blue and purple welts on your back. Now that I was ill I discovered the welts from his whip ----they hurt so badly. But luckily I was only feverish one night, the next morning I felt well enough to put on my gown with the number and go to work. Though I still ached all over, I had to work.. And that evening I had to act. The whole family looked to Father and me for food.
All the older women in the East Asia Woollen Mill liked me and spoke well of me. Knowing that I was an actress they asked me to teach them to sing, and in turn they taught me to knit and gave me a book of patterns printed by the mill. After that I learn to knit sweaters of many kinds, acquiring a new skill.
playing in Liu Qiaoer, in which the heroine spins.
