Britain under the Microscope – Newspapers
· Britain is a nation ofnewspaper readers – “the papers”/”THE news”
o Even though you have theinternet, you can still lots of people reading newspapers on trains, buses etc.
· The oldest newspaper still incirculation is the Times (1785)
· Christmas Day is the only dayin which no newspapers are published
· Sunday newspapers –usually much bigger with lots of magazines
· There are 10 nationalnewspapers and lots of local newspapers
· There are no government-ownednewspapers
· Newspapers reflect the socialview of their readers and their owners
o Tabloids
§ Daily Mail – generally conservative – mainly read by older people
§ The Sun
§ Daily Mirror
§ Daily Star – mainly about celebrity news and gossip
o Broadsheet (usually bigger insize than tabloids but this is changing)
§ The Daily Telegraph
§ The Times
§ Financial Times – focused on economy and finance
§ The Guardian – liberal
o You choose the newspaper that you like

· How to read articles –many students think that it is difficult?
o It isn’t that hard! Pictures tohelp and the headline will tell you
o Articles generally follow thesame structure
o First paragraph – Who? What?Where? When? – This tells you the main point of the article
o The other paragraph – Why?(More details)
o The final paragraph – The outcomeand/or quote
· Expressions aboutnewspapers
o “to hit the headlines” – to bein the news very suddenly
o “to break the news” – to revealsomething that is usually bad or upsetting
o “No news is good news”- used tosay that there’s nothing wrong
o “to be bad news” – someone whois bad and will probably cause trouble

第一份小报是1903年出版的每日镜报,其文章简短煽情,图片丰富。由于在公车和地铁上读报的人普遍关心通俗和八卦内容,所以小报也就在通俗八卦的路上越走越远,最终成为了今天不靠谱的代名词。
