Today I'm in Qatar at AI Udeid Airbase where we're seeing behind me British aid being launched onto a plane to be taken to AI Alrish in Egypt and from there it will be taken to Gaza to help people who badly need that aid.

We're supplying tents which will be able to take whole families and also food and other supplies. Look, it's vital that we make this aid contribution to help people in Gaza, but it's also vital that we work hard make sure that aid could actually get in.

And that's why yesterday I was in Israel, explaining to the Israelis they’ve got to open their checkpoints 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

They've got to make sure that when the aid gets to Gaza, there are UN staff with the proper visas, with the proper armored vehicles able to get that aid around Gaze to the people that need it.

There's a whole series of bottlenecks that have been in place that we need to get rid of so we can get more aid in, more quickly.

But crucially, none of this will work properly unless we have an immediate pause to the fighting that will help us to get the aid in, but it would also help us to get the hostages out, including those British hostages that I worry so much about, that they've been taken so many days ago. They've been in captivity for such a long period of time.

We worrying about their future. So pause now is necessary for that. And where does that pause go? I think we need to plan - what we are planning is to turn that pause into a sustainable permanent ceasefire without to return to more fighting.

Now for that to happen, a lot of things would need to happen alongside it. We'd have to see the Hamas leadership come out of Gaza. We'd have to see Hamas's mechanisms of being able to launch rockets and terrorist attacks on Israel be dismantled. We'd have to a new Palestinian authority that is capable of providing the government and services, not just in the West Bank, but in Gaza, too.

And crucially, we have to have a political horizon so that the Palestinian people and the Arab states in this region could see that there's a pathway from where we are now to a Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel that would provide the real security and safety to this region.

It's a hugely difficult thing to achieve, but it needs to start with a pause, move to a ceasefire and then go on to a political settlement. That what Britain is trying to do with our partners, with the Israelis, with others, to try and help make that happen.

But right now, let's get the aid onto the plane. Let’s get the aid to Egypt, get the aid into Gaza, and demonstrate that Britain is doing what it can to help people in that terrible conflict.
