Primal Scream is a tradition at Harvard University. At midnight on the last night of readingperiod and before final exams begin, students streak through the Old Yard. The streakersbegin in the north end of The Yard and generally make one lap around, but the moreadventurous sometimes aim for more. This is done both semesters, even during New Englandwinters.

Some of the streakers will “dress up” in capes and masks, or top hat, but they are still totallynaked. The walkways through which students run are lined with spectators and the HarvardUniversity Band plays beforehand to excite the crowd.

Before it became a “night when the whole student body comes together to gawk at justthat”，it was a night with a closer association to its name. Beginning in the 1960s studentswould congregate in the Yard or just open their windows and yell for 10 minutes. It wasdesigned as a way to release stress. By the 1990s, the streaking aspect of the evening hadbecome prominent. The transition from yelling to streaking is unclear. Old administratorsthat have been at Harvard since the 1970s speak of an earlier day of adventurous streakers.

Before the streaking in the Yard, there was the Quad Howl~streaking in what used to be oldRadcliffe. These administrators of the Quad houses speculate that the change from the Quadto the Yard, which happened during their time, was because the narrow pathways of the Quadcould not accommodate the increasing multitudes of people with an urge to get naked inpublic. The natural choice was to go join those in the Yard, giving them something to getexcited about.

While Primal Scream is a “naked” tradition, Costume Catwalk is a “dressed-up” tradition atHarvard. It，s a Harvard tradition for a group of freshmen to be named to the First-Year SocialCommittee (FYSC). The FYSC will be responsible for planning special eventsthroughout the year. Every year, FYSC will host the Costume Catwalk. Scores of students turn out in clevercostumes. They cheer on their classmates in a costume contest, and do a little stuff-struttingthemselves. Freshmen dress as everything from attention-hungry male prostitutes todesperately attention-hungry female strippers, and in between, some good, wholesomecostumes as well. Anyway, all are ready to compete for glory.
