Text 1

M: I’m so glad the holiday is finally here.

W: Me too. We’ve got three days in a row.

Text 2

W: Wow, you are wet all over like a drowned rat! Didn’t you know there’s a thunderstorm today?

M: I knew there would be a shower, but I didn’t realize it would rain cats and dogs today.

Text 3

M: How’s Thomas doing? I heard he got a promotion at the Business News.

W: Yes, he’s going to be the chief editor. It’s a great opportunity for him, and also for me and our children. We can really use the extra money.

M: Congratulations to you.

Text 4

M: Hi, I’m Darryl Johnson.

W: Marcia Watson. Pleased to meet you. How are you enjoying the speeches so far?

M: Oh, they’re wonderful. The speakers are really well-prepared. I’m learning so much. What about you?

W: So am I.

Text 5

W: Excuse me. I’m looking for Ken Anderson’s office. I have a 3 o’clock appointment.

M: Sure. Go up the stairs and turn right. Take a left at the second hallway. Mr. Anderson’s office will be the third door on your right. It’s between the conference room and the employee lounge.

W: Thank you.

Text 6

W: Who is it?

M: I don’t know. Wait a second.(to the person on the phone) May I ask who’s calling, please? (pause) Carol... it’s Susan.

W: Oh, I’m in the bathroom. Can you ask her if it’s important?

M: Sorry Susan, Carol can’t come to the phone right now. Is there something I can help you with? (pause) Oh, I see. (to Carol) Carol... she wants to know if the party is tonight or tomorrow night.

W: Tell her it’s tomorrow night at 8:00 at Jill’s house. Tell her to bring a dessert if she wants.

M: OK. I’ll tell her.

Text 7

W: How are things going with you and your roommate?

M: Not very well. We’re supposed to share the groceries, but I end up feeding him three meals a day. My grocery bill is huge, you know. I really can’t afford it any longer.

W: I know how you feel. I used to have a roommate like that.

M: I'm really fed up, but I just don’t know how to tell him that he should come up with half the grocery bill, because sometimes he treats me to a meal in a restaurant.

W: Well, honesty is the best policy. Maybe you just want to have a heart-to-heart, friend-to-friend talk with him. If he refuses to mend his ways, then ask him to move out.

Text 8

M: This is going to be a great camping trip. I haven’t been to this mountain since I was a young boy. Oh, I remember how peaceful it was and how great everything smelled. And the fishing was fantastic! My brother and I used to catch huge fish and fry them over the fire.

W: Yeah, Dad, we’ve heard this story since we were babies. We know—peaceful scenery, good smell, fish, everything. I’m glad we’re finally going to go. You aren’t going to make me fish with you, are you?

M: Of course you are going to fish. You’ll love it! Putting the worm on the hook... standing out in the cold water... waiting until the fish take a bite. Hmm... on second thought, maybe you won’t like it so much. Why don’t you just cook the fish for tonight’s dinner?

W: I guess I could do that. Anyway, when are we going to be there? I feel like we’ve been driving for hours.

M: It’s just around this corner. You’ll really love it.

Text 9

W: So, how are things going, Steve?

M: Well, to be honest, Carla, I was feeling great on Saturday, but I started to feel sick on Sunday afternoon. I thought I’d get better, but I feel worse than before. And I’m really worried because I’m scheduled to give a presentation at work on Friday, so I have to be better by then.

W: Well, what seems to be the problem?

M: Well, I thought I had the flu, but the doctor said it was just a bad cold. He gave me some cold medicine to take care of my stuffy nose and fever. I’m supposed to take the medicine three times a day after eating, but it doesn’t seem to help. He also told me to stay off my feet for a day or so, but I’m so busy these days.

W: Listen, forget about that medicine! I have just the thing to get rid of bad colds. You see, my mom is really into herbal medicine.

M: Oh, no.Thanks.

W: Ah, come on! Give it a try. You just take some of my mom's herbal tea and drink it four times a day. Believe me. You’ll be up and dancing around in no time.

M: Dancing around in no time, right? Well, I guess. Nothing else seems to be doing the job.

W: Great. I’ll come by your place at 7:30. See you then.
