It wasAlice’s birthday.

Alice’s mamaand papa took her to the zoo.

“Would you like a balloon?” saidAlice’s papa.

Alice reached for the balloon.

“Thank you, Papa,” saidAlice’s father.

“Thank you, Papa,” saidAlice.

“Would you like a birthday hat?” said Alice’s mama.

“No,” said Alice. “I don’t want a hat.”

“No, thank you,” saidAlice’s mama.

“No, thank you, Mama,” saidAlice. “I would like a pet.”

“A pet?” said Alice’s papa.

“Would you like a giraffe?”

“No, thank you,” saidAlice. “How will I pat its head?”

“What about a tiger?” saidAlice’s mama.

“No, thank you,” saidAlice. “How will I feed it?”

“What about an elephant?” saidAlice’s papa.

“No, thank you,” saidAlice. “Where will it sleep?”

“What about a parrot?” saidAlice.

Alice’sparents got her a parrot.

“Thank you, Mama,” saidAlice. “Thank you, Papa.”

On the way home, Alice’s father bought her an ice cream.

“Thank you, Papa,” saidAlice.

“Thank you, Papa,” Saidthe Parrot.

Alice’smother bought her a flower.

“Thank you, Mama,” saidAlice.

“Thank you, Mama,” saidthe Parrot.

When they got home, the parrot was hungry.

“Polly wants a cracker,” itsaid.

Alice gave the parrot a cracker.

“What do you say?” shesaid.

“Thank you, Mama,” saidthe Parrot.

“No. Thank you, Alice,” saidAlice. “I’m Alice.”

“Thank you, Mama,” saidthe Parrot.

The parrot was thirsty.

“Polly wants some water.”

So Alice gave the parrot a drink.

“What do you say?” shesaid.

“Thank you, Papa,” saidthe Parrot.

“No,” said Alice. “Thank you, Alice.”

“Thank you, Papa,” saidthe parrot again.

Alice frowned.

When bedtime came, Alice’s mother asked,

“Did you have a nice birthday, Alice?”

“Yes, thank you, Mama,” saidAlice.

Alice’sfather gave her a kiss.

“Thank you, Papa,” saidAlice.

“Polly wants a kiss,” saidthe Parrot.

So Alice leaned over and kissed the Parrot on the head.

“What do you say?” Alicesaid.

“Thank you, Alice,”said theParrot. “Thank you, Alice.”

And Alice kissed the parrot again.
