·      College/Sixth-form – 16-18years old – A Level – preparation for university

·      Undergraduate and Post-Graduate

o   An undergraduate degreegenerally lasts 3 or 4 years

o   A masters degree generallylasts a year

·      How do English studentsapply for universities?

·      Applying for a university – weapply for undergraduate degrees through UCAS (Universities and CollegesAdmissions Service)

o   You have to decide what youwant to study before you start

o   Not many opportunities to studycourses outside of your program

o   More reliant on interviews –universities don’t really have their separate exams

·      Starting universities

o   Starts in September

o   Fresher’s Week – this a week inwhich people go around and meet new friends – there are lots of parties –people start signing up for clubs and societies

·      What is life at anEnglish university like?

o   Seminar and lectures

§  Normally one lecture a week for a course and one/two seminars a week

§  Normally the teachers are called lecturers in the UK

§  There is usually only one/two professors in a department – usuallythe head of the department

o   Where do students live?

o   Living in Halls of Residence

§  Many students are encouraged to live in halls for the first year –normally the first time they have lived away from home

§  Usually have their own room or shared with someone

§  They are either self-catered or catered

§  Second and third year – they live back at home or they move into astudent flat with friends

o   Tuition Fees

§  Tuitions Fees have been increasing for home/EU students
