It is the fundamental dhāraṇī (sacred chant) associated with Bhaiṣajya-guru (Medicine Buddha). The mantra originates from the Sutra of the Vows and Merits of the Seven Medicine Buddhas of Lapis Lazuli Light and is widely practiced in both Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism. Its main purpose is to aid sentient beings in removing suffering caused by illness, extending life, and fulfilling their wishes.

   藥師灌頂真言的出處來自《藥師琉璃光七佛本願功德經》，該經由大唐三藏法師義淨於佛光內寺譯出。經文中描述，藥師琉璃光如來在證得菩提時，發願以慈悲力量觀照眾生，解除他們的疾病和痛苦。為了滿足眾生的願望，佛入三摩地，從肉髻中放光，並演說出大陀羅尼，即藥師灌頂真言。
