On April 18, Chinese singer Zhou Shen premiered(首演) his new song Ode to Peace(《和平颂》)at the Chinese Language Day event inside the UN headquarters (总部) in New York. News of his UN performance later went viral on the internet, with Chinese internet users expressing their love and pride for the singer on the social media platform Sina Weibo.
One of the most popular singers in China,Zhou has won the hearts of both listeners at home and abroad with his music. Wu Zhongbei teaches the guzheng at Alfred University in New York. When she introduced one of Zhou's songs to the students in her class, she found that even those who didn't speak Chinese had already heard of it. Wu recalled that one student in her class, who had traveled to China earlier this year, expressed an interest in studying Chinese after listening to Zhou's songs. Zhou's most famous song, Big Fish, has more than 2 million views on YouTube. Vocal analysts (声乐分析师) have discussed his singing skills on the video-sharing platform. In one YouTube video, a voice teacher who goes by the name Bethany said that she's really pleased (愉悦的) to hear a singer with the skill and agility (灵活) in Big Fish.
“When I watch videos on the internet of foreignlisteners reacting (反应) to Big Fish, I feel very proud. Because everyone thinks, 'wow, this Chinese music is very beautiful. And they read the lyrics, as there are translations, and they say that the lyrics are meaningful and the song is very moving," Zhou said.
