Charles Darwin （1809﹣1882），known as the Father of Modern Biology，was born in England.When Darwin was young，he didn't do well at school though he was smart.But he was a good sports player，enjoyed walking and loved learning about nature and collecting sea shells.His father was a doctor and expected Charles to be one，too.So Charles started studying medicine at Edinburgh University in 1825 but gave it up in 1827.Then he studied religion （神学） at Cambridge University from 1828 to 1831，where he spent most time collecting beetles instead of studying.
In 1831，at the age of 22，Darwin went on a journey from England to South America，Australia，South Africa and other countries by ship.He didn't feel well on the ship but this journey changed his life as he collected many fossils （化石），animals，and plants along the way.The ship finally went back to England safely in 1836.Then he spent the rest of his life studying what he had seen and collected and wrote many books.
His most famous book，On the Origin of Species，came out in 1859 and sold out in one day.He said that species evolve （进化） and change over time.At that time，people's understanding of the natural world was not good enough.After reading the book，people got to know that some living things can get used to the environment better and this makes it possible for them to better live on.It's called natural selection（选择）.Today，Charles Darwin still encourages new scientists.His spirit goes on，and he'll always be seen as a great scientist in history.
