The Fish Swimming to the Plateau
Out of the plateau the water flowed from west to east. At the mouth of the sea a fish was swimming against the tide. With the skilled swimming technique, he swam so wonderfully, now crossing the shallows the rapids. It passed through lots of nets in the lake, dodging countless birds’ chase. It went upstream through the waterfalls. It ran through the fast-flowing gorge, winning the fish’s plaudits. It kept swimming and finally crossed the gully, squeezed through the stone crevice, and swam on to the plateau. But before it uttered a shout of joy, it had been frozen instantly.
Years later, a group of climber found it in the glaciers. It still maintained a swimming posture; some people recognized this was the very fish from the mouth of the sea.
A young man praised, “This is a brave fish, going upstream, far, long and lasting.”
But an old man sighed, “It only had the great spirit but no great direction, so it only got death finally.”
