21. the cruelest lie of all is when TV shows a lawyer defending someone innocent of a crime：最残酷的谎言就是电视节目表现 一位律师为一无辜的被告辩护。
show sb. doing sth.：表现、显示某人正在做某事。
又如：

画上显示主席正在与年轻人聊天。
someone innocent of a crime 相当于 someone who is innocent of a crime, innocent of a crime是形容词短语，修饰 someone。

22. On the screen the lawyer spends day and night looking for evidence to prove the person is innocent：荧屏上律师夜以继日地查找证据以证明被告无罪。
spend time doing sth.：花……时间做某事。又如：
️She spent the whole evening reading a novel.
她整晚都用来看小说。

23. Tell me your story and then I'll plead you guilty and make a deal with the D.A.：赶紧把你的情况告诉我，我按你有罪为你辩护，然后与地方检查官做笔交易了事。(让地方检查官起诉时轻描淡写，大家省事。)
plead(法律用语)的用法：

plead guilty/not guilty：（被告自己）承认（或不承认）自己有罪。
plead one's case：（律师)为一个人的案子辩护。
D.A.：District Attorney，（美国的)地方检查官，由律师担任，其职责是在刑事案件中代表联邦政府或州政府对被告起诉。

24. The lawyer would say, "So what? I can't afford to find that out”：律师就会说：“那又怎么样？我可赔不起时间去给你查清楚。”
这里 afford to do sth. ：to have enough time to do sth.。又如：
️I'm very busy this week and can't afford to see two films.
这星期我很忙,可没时间去看两场电影。
that 是指被告说的 I'm innocent（我无罪）。

26. Then what you re saying, Dr. Applebaum, is that it isn't the violence on TV but the unreality that is doing harm to children：
you're saying：(口语)那么，你的意思是……，用来重复对方的话，以证实自己没有理解错。又如：
️Are you saying you won't go with us？

that it isn't... 是表语从句，用it isn't 引出强调的部分the violence和the unreality。如果不用强调的手段，这个表语从句应为 that the unreality, not the violence is doing harm to children。

it 指的是电视节目，包括电视广告所展示的虚幻的世界。此句的意思是那些受害深的孩子永远不能面对现实世界。
