The Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuangare considered the foremost representative of grotto arts. Dunhuang, once atown of strategic importance on the Silk Road, is located east of present-dayLanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province in northwestern China. Over a spanof nearly 1,000 years from the fourth century to the 14thcentury, agreat number of people came here to build grottoes on the precipitous cliffs ofMingsha Mountain, ultimately turning this place into an artistic treasure-housecombining architecture, painted sculptures and murals. As the statues andpaintings mostly depict the Buddha, people also call this place “The Cave ofOne Thousand Buddha Statues.”
