Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki's new film is said to be his last—and, with its reflections on life and death, it certainly feels like a farewell.

His colleagues, however, describe a director as determined and demanding as ever; a man for whom idleness is anathema.

Studio Ghibli vice president Junichi Nishioka is even more forthright. "Even now there are new ideas that he talks about," he tells BBC Culture.
