arrange+ for+ 名词/代词+to do：安排某人做某事或做成某事。又如：
*They have arranged for the writer to meet a number of his readers.
他们已经安排好作者与部分读者见面。
*He arranged for the letter to arrive on her birthday.
他刻意安排那封信在她的生日那天到达。
to be attached 是 to attach 的被动结构。

18. So you did know Ralph Matthews after all：这么说你还是认识拉尔夫·马修斯的啦。
did 用来强调 know。
after all 这里用来表示“in spite of what you said”(尽管温思罗 普小姐表示过拉尔夫·马修斯这个名字她很陌生)。又如：
So you've come after all! (原来没有指望你来)
He told me that they couldn't give me the job after all . （原来答应过）

19. throwing onto her desk a sheet of paper he had brought with him：把他带进来的那张纸甩到她的桌子上。
这是一个现在分词短语从句，作状语，修饰主句。
a sheet of paper 是 throwing 的宾语，因带有定语从句 he had brought with him 变得很长，所以放在 onto her desk 之后。 刚才格雷森先生向温思罗普小姐口述的内容侦探通过电话分 机截获，并记录在这张纸上。

20. The girl stopped her noisy typing and rose from her chair, trembling：那女人停止了发出噪音的打字，浑身颤抖着从椅子上站了起来。
trembling是现在分词，作状语，修饰 rose from her chair。 又 如：
* She ran out of the house, shouting.
她叫喊着从屋子里跑了出来。
*Sally was lying in bed, crying.
萨莉躺在被窝里哭泣。

21. And you might as well remove the silver box：你不妨把这银匣 子拿掉吧。
might/may (just) as well：不妨……，无妨，用来向他人提出建议，比 had better 委婉。
这里 The Thinking Machine 的语气多少有挖苦的意味。他接着说出提出这一建议原因：“电话联线已无必要了。”
