Sharp and witty, Lucy Liu is a no-nonsense person. As an Asian-American, her journey to stardom has been ridden with innumerable obstacles. 

After years of self-doubt and believing that she “wasn’t ever going to be important enough or good enough or right enough, color-wise”, she takes criticism into her stride, responding with dignity and poise. 

That Liu’s A-list career was forged at a time when opportunities for Asian actors in Hollywood was still limited, in the years before “diversity” and “representation” were distant buzzwords, still feels remarkable. In an op-ed, she wrote: “I feel fortunate to have ‘moved the needle’ a little with some mainstream success, but it is circumscribed.”
