Dorlcote Mill stood near a stone bridge on theriver Floss, not far from the town of Saint Ogg’s, where the tributary Ripplejoined the big river. The Floss was a lively river, and the sounds of the rushingwater, the mill wheel and the booming machinery were a constant accompanimentto life in the mill house.  

朵尔考特磨坊与弗洛斯河的一座石桥毗邻，在距它不远的圣奥格斯镇，瑞普支流汇入大河。弗洛斯河生机勃勃，奔涌的水声、磨坊轮子的转动声、机器的轰鸣声时刻装点着磨坊里面的生活。

Mr Tulliver, the owner of the mill, was adown-to-earth and outspoken man. He lived at the mill house with his wife andhis nine-year-old daughter. His son Tom, who was thirteen, was away at school.Tom was not an intellectual boy, and he hadn’t made much progress in hisstudies, but Mr Tulliver had ambitions for him. He wanted Tom to make a goodcareer as a businessman instead of working in the mill in the usual way. Heespecially wanted him to be properly educated to be able to deal with thelawyers who had caused so much trouble in his own life. It was obvious that heneeded more education than the local school could offer.

磨坊主塔利弗先生，务实而直率。他和妻子及九岁的女儿住在磨坊，而儿子汤姆则在学校就读。汤姆并不特别聪明，在学业上进步不大，但塔利弗先生却对他望子成龙。他希望他从商，而不像人们常见的那样子承父业，继续留在磨坊工作。他特别想让他受足够的教育，这样才能和律师们打交道，因为他们让他的生活磕磕绊绊，麻烦不断。很明显他儿子要受到更好的教育，这可不是当地学校所能提供的。

Maggie, Mr Tulliver’s daughter, was also a worry tohim, but for the opposite reason. She was far cleverer than her brother andspent all her time reading books and asking difficult questions. Mr Tulliverloved her dearly, but felt that it was a shame she wasn’t a boy.

而塔利弗先生的女儿玛吉，对他来说也是件烦心事儿，但原因却和汤姆的截然相反。她要比哥哥聪明得多，她有时间就读书并提各种刁钻的问题。塔利弗先生非常爱她，但她不是儿子，所以他总觉得很遗憾。

Everyone knew that too much learning could onlylead to trouble for a girl. Mr Tulliver had deliberately chosen anunintellectual woman for his own wife. Mrs Tulliver’s world revolved aroundpractical, domestic concerns. She too was worried about Maggie, but her worrieswere about her daughter’s wild behaviour, and her lack of interest in herappearance. The girl wouldn’t even let her mother curl her hair! Mrs Tulliver’ssisters were all very particular about appearances, and Lucy, her niece, wassuch an angelic, well-behaved child. What would all her relations think of her“gypsy” daughter?

谁都知道对于一个女孩来说，太多学问只会给她添乱。塔利弗先生本人就是故意选了个并不太聪明的女人当老婆的。塔利弗太太每天总是因为实际的、琐碎的家务而忙得团团转。她也替玛吉着急，但她担心的是女儿行为野性不受羁绊，而且对外貌不太在意。那孩子甚至不让妈妈给梳头！塔利弗太太自己的姐妹们都很在乎自己的容貌，而她的外甥女露西，举手投足间温柔贤淑如天使般可爱。她的亲戚们会怎么想她“吉普赛人”一样的女儿呢？

On the night before Tom’s last day at the Academy,Mr Tulliver invited a friend, Mr Riley, to the mill to discuss the next stagein his education. Mr Riley secretly knew nothing about schools or teachers, buthe didn’t like to appear ignorant when someone was asking his opinion, so herecommended a tutor called Stelling, whom he vaguely knew.

在汤姆结束现在学业的最后一天，塔利弗先生把一个朋友——瑞雷先生请到家里，讨论关于汤姆下一步教育的问题。而瑞雷先生其实对学校和老师这种事儿一无所知，但有人向他征求意见，他可不能看起来一副无知的样子啊，所以他推举了一个叫斯泰令的私塾先生，这人他还稍微认识点儿。

Mrs Tulliver was alarmed to hear that Tom wouldhave to live at Mr Stelling’s house with a number of other boys, if he wantedto study with the tutor.

塔利弗太太听说汤姆要是想去念书，就得离家和一群男孩子一起住老师家里，感到很吃惊。

“What will they give him for his breakfast?” shecried. “Who will wash his clothes?”

“他们早上给他做什么吃的呢？”她哭着说，“谁给他洗衣服呢？”

Maggie was worried that the school was far away.She wouldn’t be able to visit her beloved brother often enough.

玛吉担心的则是学校离的很远，她不能经常去看她亲爱的哥哥。

The next day, to pass the time while she waswaiting for Tom’s return, Maggie went to watch Luke, the head miller, at work.Luke wasn’t interested in any of the books that Maggie wanted to lend him, soshe talked to him about Tom instead.

第二天，等哥哥回来的时光很无聊，她就去看正在干活儿的磨工头——路克。对于她想让他看的那些书，路克可是一点也不感兴趣，于是他和她谈她的哥哥汤姆。

“When we are older, Luke,” she explained, “Tom andI will live together and I will be his housekeeper, because I love him morethan anybody in the world. He’s so clever – he knows all about making things,and about birds, fish and animals.”

她给路克解释说：“路克，等我们长大后，我和汤姆会永远住在一起，我作他的管家，因为我比世界上任何人都爱他。他太聪明了——什么东西怎么做，各种鸟啊，鱼啊，各种动物什么的，他都认识。”

“In that case,” said Luke, “he won’t be verypleased to find that his pet rabbits are all dead!”

“这么说来，”路克说，“要是他回来发现他养的小兔子都死了，他可会不开心啦！”

Maggie was horrified. Tom had asked her to feed therabbits while he was away at school, but she had been busy with her books andhad forgotten!

玛吉吓坏了，因为汤姆让她在自己上学不在家的时候喂小兔子，可她忙着看书，早把兔子的事给抛到脑后了！

When Mr Tulliver brought Tom home in the carriagelater that day, Mrs Tulliver and Maggie covered him in kisses.

那天午后，塔利弗先生用马车把汤姆接回了家，塔利弗太太和玛吉上前热烈亲吻他。

He pretended to be unconcerned but he was pleasedto see his funny, little sister. He had a surprise for her – a fishing line anda hook.

尽管他装作满不在乎的样子，但看到可爱的小妹妹他还是很开心。他给她带了一个小惊喜——一根鱼线还有一只鱼钩。

“I’ll take you fishing by the Round Pool,” hepromised. Maggie was ecstatic. “But first, I want to go and see my rabbits.”

他答应她说：“我要带你到圆湖钓鱼去，”玛吉都要乐疯了，“但首先，我得先去看看我的小兔子。”

“Oh, Tom,” said Maggie, “something terrible hashappened. The rabbits are all dead. It’s my fault because I didn’t feed them.”

Tom’s face grew angry.

汤姆的表情变得很生气。

“Maggie, how could you?” he cried. “I don’t loveyou any more, and I don’t believe that you love me. You should have taken morecare.” Maggie was heartbroken. She ran to her secret hiding-place, the attic,and cried there all afternoon. Tom, on the other hand, went to visit Luke andsoon forgot all about the rabbits. At tea time, when no one else could findMaggie, he went up to the attic to fetch her and they soon made friends again.The next day they went fishing as Tom had promised, and Maggie felt she was inheaven.

“玛吉，你怎么能这样呢？”他喊道，“我再也不爱你了，我相信你也不爱我，你应该更上心一点的。”玛吉伤心欲绝，她跑到她秘密藏身的地方——小阁楼去了，在那里哭了一下午。而汤姆呢，去看路克干活儿了，很快就把兔子忘光了。吃下午茶的时候，谁也找不到玛吉时，汤姆跑上阁楼，把她带了下来，他们很快又和好如初了。第二天，像汤姆答应的那样，带她去钓鱼，玛吉感觉自己简直像在天堂里一样快乐。
