Later on, something happened to Doctor Hua that answered all these questions in one fell swoop.
One afternoon, two plainclothes detectives arrived from the local police station. The moment they came in the door, they started questioning him: “Did a dark-skinned man come to your clinic this morning? He had a beard, puffy eyes, and a large black mole by the right corner of his mouth.”
Doctor Hua shook his head and said: “I don’t remember.” 
“How many patients did you see this morning?” the detective asked.
“This morning I only had six patients,” Doctor Hua replied.
“That’s odd!” the detective said. “You only saw six patients this morning so how come you can’t remember? Besides which, with this man’s striking appearance, even if you only caught a glimpse of him walking down the road, I reckon you’d still remember him a year later. Let me tell you, our man carried out an armed robbery at a jewellers shop over on Guyi Street last month – he’s a wanted criminal. If you refuse to tell us what we want to know, does that not make you an accessory?”
Normally, Doctor Hua never got angry, but when he heard that he was furious. Bang! He thumped the table so hard that his pliers for pulling teeth leapt in the air. 
“We Huas have been dentists for three generations, helping people in pain, and none of us has ever been involved in any kind of illegal activity. If I say I can’t remember, it’s because I can’t remember! I can also tell you for free that if I were to discover the location of a violent criminal, you wouldn’t need to come and find me, because I’d go to you!”
