The ordinary, everyday buildings that could save our cities
HOST: Razvan I. Ghilic-Micu, Senior Associate, Hassell
Samantha Peart, Head of Sustainability, Hassell
It is time to move on from the pursuit of iconic architecture.
The issues keeping our clients and collaborators up at night are the same things pushing our cities closer to the cusp of wholesale change.
Things like the competition around attracting and keeping great tenants, providing magnetic experiences and destination workplaces in uncertain times, dealing with ‘great bones’ in a building and delivering sustainable spaces are all complex, and often perplexing, issues.
Challenging the building industry to create the momentum our cities will need for people and nature to thrive together, Senior Associate Razvan I. Ghilic-Micu spoke to a cross-industry audience of property owners, managers, developers and creators at TRANSFORM, the Green Building Council of Australia’s event for sustainable built environments.
With insights from ‘From Ordinary to Extraordinary: A New Iconicity’, Razvan spoke about the key ingredients needed for this evolution to take place.
“If the framework or the system or the funding or the incentives are not ideal, well when are they ever? Make them happen.”

“There’s something really odd about the reductive identity of our cities and of our buildings when you see them represented on postcards and on keychains at the airport and on lapel pins, and in LEGO,” Razvan explains
Together with Hassell’s Head of Sustainability, Samantha Peart, Razvan explored how the finance and engineering industries can work alongside designers and embodied carbon experts to come together to see the extraordinary potential that exists on our - often ordinary - doorsteps.
With thanks to the Green Building Council of Australia for the audio from TRANSFORM 2023.
“The research challenges some of the common thoughts and perceptions that are out there about what safety actually means and helps to improve that outcome through design.“Think of how many times you look up the nutritional facts on the back of a bag of food. People are starting to do that with their buildings and with their workplaces and with their organisations.”
