When some students are late for a lesson , it will be a real dilemma for me as the teacher and for those who are already there . Technically . I should start the lesson at the scheduled time , but that means lots of my students will miss something . Especially when an important thing is supposed to be taught in that lesson , those who come late will probably be left behind . On the other hand , if I wait for them , it will be unfair to those who are there .
In my opinion , the proper way of solving this dilemma is to let the students decide . If most of them don ' t agree to wait , I ' ll start the lesson straightway . If they are fine with waiting , I ' ll allow some time ( maybe 5 minutes ), and during that short period , I ' ll do something related to previous lessons with the students , so that it won ' t be a waste of time .
No matter whether I ' ll wait , I should help those who are late to catch up . For example , when there is a repetition of what they have missed , I can remind them or ask them to have a go . Or , if it is necessary , I can offer them time off for some catch - up work . Some time after school or before the next lesson normally looks good .
But I believe that it ' s necessary to set up some mutually understood rules over being late , so that everyone knows what the rules are , that we should follow them and that anyone should be responsible for any consequence that they lead to .
