The person I know who loves to grow plants is my grandma, who is keen on growing flowers and even vegetables in the garden of our home. We have a small yard at my home, and to be honest, it’s my grandma’s secret place. My parents and I have no idea what she is doing every day in this yard. She has around ten potted plants with different kinds of flowers, which I have no clue what they are, but maybe there are some roses and lilies.
In addition, my grandma has a small area in the yard which is specifically for growing vegetables – she recently is growing tomatoes, and previously she planted potatoes. Though I don’t know what inspires my grandma to be so obsessed with growing plants, I think it is not only a hobby but also a useful skill sometimes. For example, during the lockdown in Wuhan last year, we were run out of vegetables for a few days.
The delivery could not bring food to my home successfully. However, because of my grandma’s interest in growing tomatoes, we still had enough vegetables to support the daily vitamins we needed. My grandma has had this interest for about five years. At first, she sometimes made mistakes, and the plants she grew may die, but now she is the professional in my family.
Even when sometimes my relatives have questions about plants, my grandma is the first one they can think of to ask for advice. She loves growing plants because, according to her, she enjoys the time when she can stay with plants without thinking about any troubles that happen in life – the only thing she needs to do is to experience nature and find a secret place in this noisy city.
