(1) To ensure the safe navigation, a proper lookout is necessary for watch keepers to cooperate with other vessels, to take proper actions early, to avoid any imminent danger or close-quarters situation.

(2) Through VHF radio telephone or telegraph, navigational warnings may be obtained in time. Many serious accidents would occur without navigational warnings, so it’s very important to keep watch on VHF to get timely navigational warnings.

(3) In poor visibility, we can use VHF to communicate with other vessels or port authorities within 25 nmiles, so information to avoid collision can be exchanged in time. With VHF, watch keepers can cooperate with other vessels effectively to avoid imminent danger.
