「Tom was the tooth fairy. He had a very important job. Every night, he flew to children’s houses.」
「He collected teeth from under the children’s pillows. Then he gave him a coin for each tooth.」
So can you see the word “children”? Children means there’s more than one child. So it’s one of those funny words that has an “’s”. Often if we talk about more than one thing, so we can say “the dog’s bowl”, it means one dog and it's “dog’s”.If we mean the dogs, as in all dogs, or lots of dogs, we put dogs then an apostrophe.
Sometimes we have an apostrophe then another “s”, but children is already means more than one. So we always write “children’s” meaning it belongs to them. We have an “’s”. The children’s houses. The children’s pillows.
The children's houses(孩子们的房子)。The children's pillows(孩子们的枕头)。
「But sometimes Tom played with the children’s toys, too.」
Remember that word “too” here means “as well”. So little bit naughty isn’t it?
记住“too”这个单词,它的意思是“as well(也)”。
「One night, Tom flew into Polly’s room. It was full of lovely toys to play with!」
「He played with the teddies, stroking their fur. He rocked on the rocking horse and played with the toy train.」
So he’s not being really naughty here, is he? He’s being very kind to the teddy bear. He’s stroking the fur. I wonder whether you have a teddy bear.
And he’s riding, he rocked on the rocking horse and played with the toy train. There’s lots of other toys I think I can see in Polly’s room. Look at Polly, she’s fast asleep.
「Then Tom saw the dolls house. He flew in to say ‘hello’ to the dolls.」
「He ran up and down the tiny stairs. He sat at the table and poured tea into the tiny cups.」
They’re a little bit like my cup, but my cup doesn’t have a saucer. Can you see in the picture, the tea is in a cup and saucer, and there’s a teapot as well. So you “pour” the tea, it’s an action, it’s a verb. You pour the tea into the tea cups. I wonder whether it’s a nice cup of tea he’s having. I think it might just be a pretend one. What do you think?
「Suddenly, Polly’s alarm clock went off. She started to wake up.」
「“Oh no! It’s six o’clock,” said Tom. “I have to go!”」
「He ran to the window and flew out, just in time. Hmm...but he had forgotten to collect Polly’s tooth.」
Oh dear. So it’s six o’clock, the alarm has gone up off. I wonder what time you get up in the morning? Six o’clock is quite early. My dogs like to get up at six o’clock, it’s quite early in the morning.
「Tom flew back to fairyland as fast as he could.」
「“Huh, you are late,” said the Fairy Boss. “Did you get lost?”」
「“I’m sorry,” said Tom. “I was playing with Polly’s toys and I forgot the time.”」
「“Oh, Tom, not again! You are naughty,” said the Fairy Boss. “Go and put Polly’s tooth with the rest.”」
Oh, dear.
「Tom felt in his bag for the tooth. Oh no! He had forgotten it! Polly would be so sad. He would have to go back.」
So here, can you see this big circle with the three little bubbles by the side? This shows that’s what he’s thinking. He’s thinking about what Polly would be like when she looks under her pillow and finds her tooth still there, and no money for her...Oh, dear.
「That night, after it was dark, Tom set off. He made sure Polly was asleep and flew into her room.」
「He didn’t look the toys. He didn’t stop to play. He had to get Polly’s tooth.」
And see her, asleep in the bed.
「He crept over to the bed, and slid his hand under her pillow. Yes! The tooth was still there! 」
「Slowly, Tom pulled the tooth out and put it in his bag. Then he put a shiny coin where the tooth had been.」
Can you see what the time is? It’s four o’clock. I think that’s four o’clock in the morning. That’s not a time that you should be awake.
「Tom flew off into the night. He had lots more work to do. 」
「When Polly woke up in the morning, she felt under her pillow. There, where the tooth had been, was a bright, shiny coin! The tooth fairy had come at last!」
Can you see the time on the clock now? It’s seven o’clock. That’s a better time to wake up. And if you look very carefully at Polly, you can see that she has a tooth, it almost looks like some teeth missing. And she’s finally got her coin. So eventually, it all worked out!
And I wonder if you can think what lesson we learn from this story. Well, it says Tom is rather naughty. He doesn't do anything really that bad. He just gets a little bit excited, a little bit carried away and starts playing with the toys.
He doesn't do the job that he's meant to do, but he's having a really lovely time, but he forgets about time. And suddenly Polly starts to wake up and he thinks “Oh no! She shouldn’t be able to see me! I need to get out of here! I need to disappear!” And he does that, but he forgets to take the tooth.
