AILSA CHANG, HOST:

Well, it is the first fullday with Elon Musk as the head of Twitter. It's a big deal for politicians, themedia and all sorts of people who use Twitter to get their messages out and tolearn information. What has Musk been doing already now that he'sin charge of Twitter?

He moved quickly tosweep out the top executives, some of whom he's criticized publicly before -the CEO, CFO, top lawyer and, importantly, the public policy chief who wasresponsible for deciding which accounts got suspended when they ran afoul ofTwitter policies.

CHANG: Right, a whole bunchof people said goodbye.

BOBBY ALLYN:Musk came in and fired the CEO. He canned other uppermanagement. He then tweeted, quote, "The bird is freed,"which apparently is a reference to Twitter's blue bird logo. Musk reportedlyhas considered laying off 75% of the staff, something that really has peopleinside of the company on edge. In terms of changes to Twitter itself, you know,we're still in the early innings of Twitter's Elon era, so hard to say rightnow. But he has promised a whole host of changes, including relaxing rulesagainst things like hate speech and harassment, unbanning controversial figureslike former President Trump and cracking down on spam bots. These are just afew of the items from his wish list.

CHANG: So what are youhearing from people about, like, how they feel about the Musk takeover ofTwitter at this point?

DILLON: It depends on yourperspective. For some, there is a feeling of desperation, with people wonderingwhat's next, mourning their online communities, reminiscing about funny tweetthreads or memes from back in the day. Others, there is a tone of celebrationabout an end to what they call censorship on the platform. Take formerPresident Donald Trump, whose account was suspended after the January 6attack...

CHANG: Right.

DILLON: ...On the U.S.Capitol. Trump said today that he's happy to see Musk in charge. We'll see ifMusk reinstates his account.

BOBBY ALLYN:Trump himself has said he doesn't want to come back toTwitter. He says he prefers his own site, Truth Social. Now, I'm personallyskeptical that he won't return to the platform, especially because he'spublicly weighing another run for president. And it's just hard to see the riseof Trump without Twitter, right? It helped shape him as a political animal. Ithelped him find an enormous national fan base. Now, researchers I've talked tohave said since Trump left Twitter, disinformation across the whole platformhas dropped in a pretty meaningful way. But will he come back? Will Elon extendan invitation? Probably, but just not sure when exactly.
