The Earl of Zheng Overcomes Duan at Yan
Zuo’s Commentary
First Year of Duke Yin of Lu, or 722BCE
初,郑武公娶于申,曰武姜。生庄公及共叔段。庄公寤生,惊姜氏,故名曰“寤生”,遂恶之。爱共叔段,欲立之,亟请于武公,公弗许。
At first, Duke Wu of Zheng married a woman of the house of Jiang in the State of Shen, and henceforth she was called Wujiang. Later, she bore two sons—Duke Zhuang and his younger brother Duan of Gong. When her elder son was born, his feet came out first. This frightened the mother, so she named him Wusheng, meaning “bore with feet out first,” and disliked him. However, she loved Duan and wished him to be declared his father’s heir. For many times, she asked Duke Wu about that, but he always refused to grant him the title.

When her elder son acceded the throne, she begged him to confer on Duan the city Zhi.“It is a dangerous place,”replied Duke Zhuang.“The rule of Guo died there. But as for any other place, I will certainly obey your command.”She then requested the city of Jing and the duke agreed. There Duan took up his residence and came to be called Taishu (The great Younger) of Jing.
