The truant逃学生
James Brown was ten years old when his parents sent him to
school. It was not far from his home, and therefore he would walk
to school alone. But, instead of going to school, he often played
truant. That is, he would not go to school but play all day instead. He
would go down to the water and spend his time with other lazy boys.
When James got home, he would lie to his mother. He would tell her
that he had been to school, and had worked hard there.
One fine morning, his mother told him to hurry home from school
because, after he had come back, she would take him to his aunt's
house for a visit.
Instead of listening to her, he went off to the water where there were
some boats. There he played with many other lazy boys. Some of
these boys found that James had money, which his aunt had given
him. They asked him to hire a boat, and go with them on the water.
James listened to them.He did not think of the danger he was
running into. Soon a strong wind began to blow, and none of them knew how to
manage the boat. For some time, they rowed against the wind and the moving
water to try to get back to land. At last, they became so tired that they could
row no longer.
A large wave turned over the boat, and they were all thrown into the water.
Think of James Brown, the truant,at this time! He was far from home,
known by no one. His parents did not know the danger he was in. He
was struggling in the water, nearly drowning.
Some men, however, saw the boys and went out to them in another boat. They
reached them just in time to save them from drowning. They were taken into a
house where their clothes were dried. After a while, they were sent home to
their parents.
James was very sorry for his lying to his mother and behaving badly. In fact,
he never played truant again. Instead he went to school every day and worked
hard.
