Pakistan floods: One-third of country is under water

One-third of Pakistan has been completely submerged by historic flooding, its climate minister says. "We've never seen anything like this," the minister added. Devastating flash floods have washed away roads, homes and crops - leaving a trail of deadly havoc across Pakistan. Officials estimate that more than 33 million Pakistanis - one in seven people - have been affected by the flooding. At least 1,136 people have died since the monsoon season began in June, according to officials.

The summer rain is the heaviest recorded in a decade and is blamed by the government on climate change. Of those who are known to have died, 75 were in the past 24 hours alone, officials said on Monday, adding that the death toll is expected to rise.  Pakistan's planning minister says early estimates show the devastating floods that hit the country have caused at least $10b in damage.

Drinking tea may protect heart for longer life

Tea drinkers who consume more than two cups a day are likely to live longer than those who don't drink any, a new study suggests. The findings, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, concluded that the positive effects appear unaffected by whether the tea is taken black, with milk, with sugar, the temperature it's drunk, or by genetic variants influencing the rate at which people metabolize caffeine.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health used data from UK Biobank, which saw 85% of the half a million men and women, aged 40 to 69, report that they regularly drink tea. Of those, 89% said they drank black tea. The study was conducted with a questionnaire answered from 2006 to 2010, and followed up over more than a decade. It found that compared with those who do not drink tea, the regular consumption of black tea (the most widely consumed tea in Europe) was associated with a modest reduction of between 9% and 13% in mortality over 10 years in a middle-aged, mostly white, adult general population, especially in terms of cardiovascular disease.

Texas reports first US death in person with monkeypox

Texas on Tuesday reported the first death in a severely immuno-compromised person who was diagnosed with monkeypox, according to state health department officials. The case is still under investigation to see what role monkeypox played in the death. Although painful, monkeypox is rarely fatal. Scott Pauley, a spokesman for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an email the agency is aware of the reported death in an adult in Harris County, Texas.

"CDC continues to closely monitor the monkeypox outbreak, and we are actively working with Texas officials to investigate this situation," he said. "Until the investigation is complete, it is premature to assign a specific cause of death." Cases caused by the form of the virus now circulating in the United States - Clade IIb - are rarely fatal, although people with weakened immune systems may be more likely to get seriously ill or die, Pauley said.
