96. We Should Look to the Forest with Humility

The abundant rainfall over the mountains drenches the forest, and the water flowing down the valleys feeds endlessly into the wetlands. Within the dampness of the forest, each organism finds its own place to call home. The forest is made up of a variety of ecosystems.

Fed by the moisture from the trees, plant life thrives in the forests on the island of Yakushima. Plants grow out of the humus-covered earth, on fallen trees or stumps, and even at the tops of trees. Standing in front of one of these magnificent trees. a forest unto itself, you cannot help but

ponder our human existence.

The trees in the forest stand serenely, halting the fall of the massive raindrops. I walk through the forest, and the rain dances as it splashes against leaves, enshrouding the woods in fog. I take a deep breath, and the rain soaks to the very depths of my lungs. The water flows from leaf to branch, then down the trunks of the trees-already, it is becoming a part of the wetlands. The budding plants on the tree trunks, even those at the top of the trees, take their water from this flow. At the foot of the trees, their leaves turn into rich humus, retaining water that helps to bring

life to other organisms in the forest. The life cycle of the forest is inseparably joined to the flow of water. Water fosters life in all of the organisms under the forest's canopy, and in turn this same water brings life to us. How humble this should make us feel! We consider it a matter of fact that water pours out of our faucets when we turn on the tap. The drainage from our unsparing water use finds its way into the rivers and eventually flows to the ocean. The oceans, however, is losing its ability of cleanse this water.

Rain collects pollution from the atmosphere, and falls once more to the forest. The forest nurtures our lives and the lives of so many other creatures, yet it is threatened This no longer even comes as a surprise to most people, we all know that the water and the air are not getting any cleaner, and the fact is that if we do not regulate our daily lives, the forest is in danger. The sight of once healthy trees that now stand dead is becoming more common. The plant life that is supported by the trees is also in a delicate position. This is the face of our future. We are harming

the environment in which our waters circulate. We must look to the forest, which bring so much life to the world, with more humility. Standing in front of one of these trees, it becomes clear just how much our lives are intertwined.
